Gloved hands reaching into the opened rear panel of an appliance, a row of screwdrivers laid out on a folded towel, a green work light overhead.

    The Big Four Appliances

Washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator. The same five failure families account for most of what goes wrong with all four.

Module 3 of 74 lessonsWritten in full1 worksheet

    The lessons

All 4, in the order they are read.

    1. 1. Water in, water out
Fill valves, float switches, drain pumps and the check valve: the wet half of three of the four machines.
    2. 2. Heat and airflow
A dryer that takes three cycles is almost never a broken heater; it is restricted airflow, and the vent is the first place to look.
    3. 3. The refrigerator you can fix, and the part you cannot
Defrost systems, door seals, fans and drain lines are yours; the sealed system is not, and the symptoms differ.
    4. 4. Seals, bearings and noise
Noise is diagnostic. Which noise, at which point in the cycle, names the part more reliably than any error code.

    Appliance triage sheet

Work the rows top to bottom. Most faults are resolved before row six. The last row is the honest one: an eleven-year-old machine needing a control board is a machine you replace, and this sheet exists partly to tell you that.
